There is a lot to be said about social media branding and getting your own personal brand out online in front of as many people as you can. One of the best tools to do this is Facebook.

Next is your wall, which as the title of this article suggest is a timeline of all your activity since you ever joined Facebook. I know that with the old version you could scroll down your profile opening up older status updates but this can take a long time if you want to go back 3 years!

On the side of your update you have a mini timeline where you can select what you want to see, speed up the whole process.

What you will notice is that more emphasis has been put on the time line and your status up dates. Everything is now much bigger than ever before. Any images, video's and photos you upload are a lot bigger than before.

This gives you a great opportunity to share your content and have it stand out a lot more. This means you should be putting all your videos up on Facebook as anyone visiting your profile will not be able to miss them.

It seems that text updates and people writing on your wall take second place over videos and images. This is great if you are like me and your send people a birthday video or welcome message and post it on their wall.

This is not only different from what everyone else is doing, but it will also give you more exposure in doing it. The problem with that is people will start using it for spamming rubbish onto your wall.

Unfortunately with any change the spammers will figure out ways to use it to their advantage and spoil things for everyone else.

The new timeline set up is a great change that Facebook has made, far better than when the changed over the groups, although that has now grown on me, apart from the fact you can't invite people, you just have to add them.

The old days of "if you build it, they will come", are long gone. You need to be demonstrating to people you know what you're talking about, and you can do that easily with great content. Creating content when you really know your subject is not difficult. There are tons of ways that you can create content, and that great content is going to engage more people.

Three ways that you can create that great content:

Share more. When you make and create a blog post on your website, on your blog, don't just leave it there as a blog post. If you think you are already sharing enough, double what you do for a month and test what happens. I promise you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Use pictures. People love pictures. There are many different ways to share your pictures. I like sharing my pictures through Twitpic on Twitter. I post albums on Facebook. I use the Google Photo Album. I use a ton of places. Now, and going back to point number one, I could share more. I could take more pictures, and I'll bet you that you can too. I picture says a thousand words; I'll have to look that one up. Use more pictures to get your point across, to grab people's attention, and one little quick tip, always put a picture into your blog post. If your blog post is extra long, put in more pictures. Each and every one of your blog posts needs a picture.

Great way to create more content is with video. Did you know that YouTube is a big community all unto itself? There are hundreds of thousands of people using YouTube on a daily basis. Your videos, whether they be just for fun or you're talking about your product or service are out there working for you 24/7. My example is that I have hundreds of videos out there on how to show people how to do different little things on the social media site. Where can you use video in your business? Remember, it doesn't always have to be about your business. You can find videos that people have on YouTube and you can share those as well. They don't always have to be your own. That can be part of your sharing more. If it's appropriate for you to embed the video into your blog post, then you go ahead and do that, too.

Remember, your product or service improves the lives of others. Create that great content. Get it out of your head and down on paper, in pictures, or on video, and get your content out there so that you can share more.

What You're Losing By Not Embracing Social Media

What Twitter Can Do For You

I remember when I set up my first Twitter account a few years ago. I registered, signed in and then stared at a blank screen thinking, "now what?" I was a solo marketer at a small technology company and was trying to keep up with social media as well as my traditional marketing role.

In the years since creating my Twitter account, I can say first and foremost that it has offered me personal and professional development.

I was able to find a community of B2B marketing and PR professionals who were supportive and offered help, feedback and opinions. It was refreshing to find a group of individuals who were so supportive.

I was also able to listen and monitor prospects at trade shows and find and follow edtech leaders, a target market of my job at the time. By listening to this group as well as learning about their daily struggles, I felt that I better understood their perspectives as customers and teachers.

As a parent, I had this group of teachers available to ask questions and get feedback about education. One example when my sensitive five year old daughter (in kindergarten at the time), was shown The Wizard of Oz without my knowledge. She had nightmares for two weeks. I received a lot of support and feedback and advice as to what to do as far as approaching the teacher and school.

In addition to finding communities relevant to my work life, I was able to find people with similar interests. My youngest daughter has food allergies and I had trouble after her diagnosis getting support and advice. Friends and family tried to help, but I have had to educate them as well and they just didn't understand the constant stresses of coping with food allergies. I have found tremendous support from fellow food allergy moms and dads on Twitter. It is a relief to find other people facing the same challenges in life and to share our experiences.

I have also been able to reach people directly that I would have never in a million years been able to reach had I gone through traditional channels. On the fun side, I asked Stewart Cink for golf advice for my golf enthusiast father and he sent me advice that I then included with his birthday gift.

I was able to research and poll people using Twitter and LinkedIn for a project - just like with a focus group. And Twitter can be used to help with your job search.

When Atlanta ran out of gas, I used Twitter and the hashtag #atlgas to find gas.

The applications are endless. People are on Twitter right now, ready to help. Why aren't you?

The Decline Of Usenet

I am a Judgment Broker that writes a lot. This article is my opinion about why Usenet is declining.

Usenet has been around long before the (www) web. I have used Usenet servers almost daily, for at least 20 years. In the last days of 2011, I decided to pull the plug, and give Usenet up "cold turkey".

Usenet is divided into two groups, text and binary. The text portion is an incredible array of discussion groups for almost any topic. The discussions are "plain text", that can be viewed with a wide variety of Usenet readers, and also some email programs.

The best feature of the text part of Usenet, is how it is often the best (fastest and the least frustrating) way to get a simple question answered. If you want to know what happened, or to get opinions on anything, you can get an intelligent answer quickly.

Over the years, there have been many questions that I could only find answers for, on Usenet. Usenet is almost always unfiltered, so one can also find certain people that would rather insult, correct, or chastise you; than to help you.

The binary Usenet groups have (or had) pictures, music, videos, program files, operating systems, and many software programs. The binary Usenet groups are encoded, so it looks like gibberish.

Usenet's binary encoded groups require a separate conversion program, to convert them into the "binary" files that computers can understand. The conversion programs are either free or cheap, and easy to find.

Because of these advantages, I used Usenet for at least 20 years. In the last 18 years or so, the only part of the binary Usenet groups I used was the music sections.

Usenet's binary music groups used to be amazing. The encoded music files were organized by decades from the 1920s to today. Historically, on Usenet, one could find music that could not be bought or found anywhere else.

It seems nearly every day someone is offering a seminar or webinar on social media. We're told to sit in and learn about the various social media tools and strategies. You wonder: What more could be said about social media? What does all this mean for me and my business? Good questions.

Too often presenters talk about the various components of social media without fully explaining why businesses should be involved. Today, customers of all ages use social media platforms to communicate. What should you do? Get involved, but in a systematic way. Concentrate on putting out valuable content; content that piques interest, solves problems, and otherwise raises awareness of your firm. Observe the types of questions that are being posed and the topics raised. To what extent can you write about those (and other topics) as they relate to your business?

Keep in mind that visitors are hungry for information. Tone down the sales pitches, and ramp up the useful content. Use your knowledge and expertise to offer suggestions that will make our lives better.

You can still work in a marketing angle. Facebook has proved to be a powerful platform for larger firms to hold contests and other interactive events. Think of fun ways to engage visitors to your fan page, and reward them accordingly. Gift certificates, coupons, and other awards help maintain interest and a following.

Be patient as you launch your social media campaign. You may not see a tremendous response right away. Keep it up, and over time you will develop a following. That following - those leads - are gold for your firm.

@ - pronounced 'at', this will be familiar from emails. On twitter, it is used as a way to direct a person's attention to your tweet. So if you want to send a tweet directly to Ashton Kutcher, you start it with @aplusk Getting a tweet with @ in front of your username means that it will appear in the "@mentions" column on the twitter website, or in whichever twitter programme you use. Similarly, when you use @, the person whose name follows it is less likely to miss it because it will appear in their 'mentions' column too.

RT - an abbreviation of 'retweet'. A retweet is when you see a tweet that is so good, you want to share it with your own followers too. Unspoken twitter etiquette means that it is inappropriate to just copy and paste it, rather, always retweet it to credit the original tweeter. You do this by, if you are retweeting Bill Cosby, you begin it with RT @billcosby, followed by the original tweet. Nowadays, the kind of RT that I have just described is known as an "old retweet". This refers to the fact that those who use twitter from the twitter.com website can no longer retweet posts in that way. Now the only retweets available are the "new retweets", where you have no option to add your own words or commentary to the beginning. Most of the twitter software that is available offers you both options, and even a newer "new retweet" which, ironically, is like an old RT but rather than beginning with RT @billcosby, it puts Bill's whole tweet between quotation marks.

Because of the structure of the retweet, including the @ from the original tweeter, any retweet will appear in their @mentions column for each retweet they get. So, if someone retweets your tweets, you can find out by checking your own @mentions column.

# - a hashtag. This is used on twitter as a shortened way of saying "what I am talking about is...". So, a tweet might read "This is so funny! #frasier" or "Check out our latest offers #cupcakes #baking".

Tweet-up - A tweet-up is when people who met on twitter meet up in real life.

Trending topics - When hundreds or thousands of people on twitter are all talking about the same thing - frequently a TV programme or a breaking news story - it can become a trending topic. These are highlighted in the right hand column on the twitter website, usually in the form of hashtags.
